Growing up in the Midwest, steak is a pretty common dinner selection. My grandpa actually raised cattle on his small farm. We had steak fairly often growing up and now luckily Hubby loves to grill and is really very good at it. While we enjoy going out to a restaurant for steak occasionally, it is not in our budget to do that all the time. Steak was on sale today at the grocery store so I decided to pick up our favorites so Hubby could grill them at home. The entire cost of the meal was probably around $35 for the steaks, potatoes, zucchini, wine, and miscellaneous potato toppings and that serves all three of us in our family. This is a huge savings over going out for a steak dinner.

I generally shop at Dierbergs, a chain here in the St. Louis area, and they have a nice meat department including an actual butcher counter still. When I am going to buy steaks like this I go straight to the counter generally. I picked out everyone’s favorite cuts. A Porterhouse for Hubby, a New York Strip for me, and a T-Bone for Taylor.

Here is my steak. I like mine cooked medium and Hubby did that perfectly! I have Hubby sprinkle McCormick’s Montreal Steak Seasoning on mine also – but this steak could have been plain and still had a great taste.

Porterhouse Steak with Baked Potato and Grilled Zucchini

Hubby’s giant Porterhouse. No, we do not eat giant cuts of meat like this all the time. This was out of the ordinary for us.

You can see that we had baked potatoes also. They aren’t really baked, we scrub them, poke a few holes, and cook them in the microwave. I also picked up some organic zucchini at the store. I just quartered these, drizzled with a little extra virgin olive oil, and then seasoned with salt, fresh pepper, and garlic powder. Hubby threw them on the grill while he cooked the steaks – super easy!

Now my wine aficionado friends, I do know that a sweet red wine is not the “right” pairing for steak, but hey it is what I liked at the store when they had samples the other day. We do not drink wine with dinner generally, but since I had it and we splurged on the steaks I figured why not. flipflop wines are very tasty and not expensive at all.
