We like to try all different kinds of food in our house. Recently MacFarlane Pheasants sent us a whole pheasant to try (disclosure). Hubby is a hunter, but he has never hunted pheasants, so this was new for us.

MacFarlane Whole Pheasant

Hubby decided to grill the pheasant – he also added some chicken to grill since pheasants are actually fairly small birds. We had searched for a lot of different ways to cook pheasant, but the weather was lovely and he wanted to grill. By the way, I would love to show you pictures, however they were on my phone and I had to format it and had forgotten the cooked pheasant pics were on it – doh! Hubby just did some simple seasoning and then grilled it over indirect heat on the grill. BUT I can tell you that we really liked the flavor of the pheasant. Yes, there is definitely a resemblance of a chicken flavor, I mean they are both birds, but the MacFarlane Pheasant has a more intense flavor, but not gamey at all. It is a mild flavor, but very definite, unlike a lot of the grocery store chicken which can be virtually flavorless. This was a nice change for me because I have been eating a lot of plain chicken with my weight loss journey. Pheasant is also healthy and is lower in total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol than compared to chicken, domestic turkey, or beef.

The pheasants from MacFarlane are “All Natural” third party certified. They’re fed natural grains, with no antibiotics, hormones or animal by-products. They are also humanely handled and have spacious free-roaming barns. Apparently a happy bird is a tasty bird!

Now I think we will be eating more pheasant and I found this recipe from MacFarlane Pheasants for Grilled Pheasant Kabobs that have jalapenos and bacon that we are going to have to try! Make sure to check out the entire pheasant recipe section. Along with whole pheasants ready to cook they also have whole smoked pheasants, pheasant breasts, and pheasant breast strips plus a selection of various other game meats including alligator, quail, and venison to name a few. Take a few minutes to look around the MacFarlane Pheasants online store to see all of their offerings.

Grilled Pheasant Kabobs from MacFarlane PheasantsGrilled Pheasant Kabobs

MacFarlane Pheasant Original

1 to 1 ½ pounds MacFarlane Pheasant breast strips
1 jar sliced jalapeno peppers, 4 ounces
12 slices bacon, cut into thirds
6 bamboo skewers, soaked in water

Cut the pheasant breast into 36 pieces and place in a mixing bowl. Pour the juice from the jalapeno peppers over the pheasant and marinate for 20 minutes.

Preheat outdoor grill for medium heat; lightly oil the grate. Drain the marinade from the pheasant. Place a slice of jalapeno pepper onto each piece of pheasant breast, and wrap with a bacon strip and slide onto skewer. Place 4 to 6 rolled wraps on each skewer. Place kabobs on the grill, turning frequently for 15 minutes, or until the bacon is crispy. Remove skewers from grill. Plate and serve immediately.

Using an oven:
Turn on the broiler; place skewers on baking pan. Keep pan 6 inches away from the heat source to avoid cooking too quickly. Broil each side for 10 minutes, or until bacon is crisply, turn and broil 10 additional minutes. Remove skewers from oven, plate and serve immediately.

Yield: 9 servings
