Tutorial on how to create a custom report in Google Analytics to see which day of the week has the best traffic on your blog

Most of us have a vague idea on what days work best on our blogs. For me, I know that the weekends have lower traffic generally speaking. I was not quite sure of which day of the week was actually my best though so I thought I would find out with Google Analytics.

Now, I have to say that I am not a pro at Google Analytics in the least. Most of it confuses me to be honest. However, I was able to figure out how to make a custom report to help me find the answer to my day of the week question so I thought I would share with you all for Work Wednesday.

  1. Log in to your Google Analytics account and go to the blog (on the list) that you want to create the custom report for.
  2. Now click CUSTOMIZATION at the top of the screen

  3. Next click NEW CUSTOM REPORT

  4. You will then be presented with a form to complete. Enter the name you want – I used “Best Day of the Week”. Then in the “METRIC GROUPS” area click the “+ add metric” button and select “VISITS”, then from that menu scroll down and select “VISITS” again. Now in the “DIMENSION DRILLDOWNS” area click the “+ add dimensions” button. First select “OTHER”, then select “DAY OF WEEK”. Now the SAVE button.

  5. Once you save it will take you to the page with the report – scroll down just a bit past the regular chart you see and you will see a table. Note that Google Analytics uses numbers for days of the week instead of actual names. Why? I do not know. 0=Sunday, 1=Monday, 2=Tuesday, 3=Wednesday, 4=Thursday, 5=Friday, 6=Saturday

  6. You can change the style of report to what you prefer using the buttons at the upper right of the table. The above image is the default, then there is a pie chart, performance, and comparison. The last is a pivot which doesn’t work well for this type of report.

    To add this new custom report to your dashboard is easy also. On the custom report page you just made, at the top select ADD TO DASHBOARD and a box will pop up. Select “My Dashboard” (or whatever dashboard you like if you have changed the defaults), CHECK the box for TABLET, then click the ADD TO DASHBOARD button. Now when you go to your main Google Analytics dashboard you will see the table.

Again, I am not a pro at Google Analytics and there may even be an easier or better way to do this but this is how I managed to do it for myself and it worked.

Also – at the beginning of this post I stated weekends are not my strong days on my blog but the screenshot examples I shared show that Sunday is my best day. This is just a fluke because last Sunday I had a major Pinterest surge on one item that was 3 times my normal traffic. You can adjust the dates you are making the chart with in the top right just like all the Google Analytics reports if you need to. Normally my best days are Tuesday and Wednesday.
