Summer Smartphone Tips by Robyn Wright

It is most definitely summer and the heat is getting tough for us to handle. Not only is it hard on people, but summer can be hard on your smartphone too.

  • Keep it Cool

Smartphones can actually overheat. Usually you feel them warm up when you are charging them or using them heavily. But, even if not being used, if left in direct sun or extremely hot temperatures can cause a problem. Make sure you keep your phone in the shade when you are out and about. Some newer phones have temperature sensors built in and they will tell you when it is getting too hot even.

  • Keep it Dry

You all know that a wet phone is a bad, bad thing. It is so important to keep your phone dry and in the summer it may be harder than you think. We seem to all be around water more often this time of year whether at the pool, beach, or swimming hole. Make sure you don’t forget your phone is in your pocket and jump in with it. Sweat is another big problem in the summer. My husband has ruined phones from sweating while working in the yard in the summer and having his phone in pocket to listen to music while he works. There are some cases available that offer water protection, but I have not tried any of them personally.

  • Keep it Clean

With being outside more often in the summer our phones tend to get dirtier too. A protective case this time of year is very helpful. The Otterbox Defender is a good choice – my husband uses these and he has yet to torture a phone to death while it was in his Otterbox Defender case. Make sure you clean your phone often during the summer too. Even if it is in a case, take the time to take it out of the case and wipe it well with a microfiber cloth and a small brush can help get the small dust around buttons and openings. Don’t forget to clean the camera lenses!

  • Keep the Bill Under Control

Use your carriers apps or others apps to keep track of your data usage. When we are traveling and outside more we tend to use more data from our plan. You can go over your data limit a lot faster in the summer. It is cheaper to bump up your plan amount for the summer than pay the overage fees. If you travel out of the country make sure you find out what charges will be before leaving – international roaming fees can really be astronomical. If the kiddos are using your phone (or tablet) in the backseat on a road trip make sure they cannot “accidentally” buy movies, games, in-game items, etc. without your permission too. It happens.
