Disclosure: I am being compensated for this Bluebird project. Opinions are my own.

Have you heard of Bluebird? It is an alternative to traditional checking and debit cards that you get from a bank. The service is provided by American Express and Walmart, an interesting combo. I have been asked to get a Bluebird account and try it out and share my experience over the next several months with all of you.

If you have older kids headed off to college or starting out life after high school this fall I think this might be a really great way to help them manage their money. Most of us with teens and early 20’s kids do still help them out with money and this looks like it will be an easier way to do that for both the parents and the kids.

You can get a kit at Walmart to get started for $5 or you can just go online and sign up – I opted for the later. It was super fast to sign up initially. I’m looking forward to getting the kit in the mail and getting the account and subaccounts all set up to see if Bluebird is something that works for my family. I do love that this has so many features and so little fees as our bank recently changed a lot of things and added more fees and more minimum balance and usage requirements that young adults do not always meet. I do wish they had an app for Windows Phones already, but it is available for iPhone and Android.

Stay tuned to see how my family uses Bluebird and what we think about it!
