The other day I was talking to someone about food and started chatting about foods we remember from our childhood. I thought this would be a fun Throwback Thursday post. Below are three things I remember from back in the 70s that I never see any longer. Do you remember these?

Doritos & Ott’s Dressing Taco Salad

This was a staple salad at picnics in the summer when I was a kid. I loved when my mom made this! It is a gloppy and messy salad but it sure tasted good. There are tons of variations of this recipe, but the one we used was from Ott’s, a salad dressing company. There original Ott’s Famous Taco Salad recipe just says corn chips, but it was imperative to the way my mom made it to use Doritos. The chips get a little soggy by the time you eat it but still taste good for some reason. The recipe has an optional avocado but I do not ever remember Mom using that, but back in the 70s I don’t think avocados were readily available in St. Louis.

Spinach Salad with Warm Bacon Dressing

I see spinach salads everywhere these days, but not spinach salad with warm bacon dressing. My guess is because the bacon dressing is not the healthiest thing in the world. This salad was amazing though. To make the dressing you use 3 tablespoons of the bacon fat – I know, yikes – but we all know that it is tasty! Why can’t bacon and bacon fat be good for us? Alton Brown has a recipe for this Spinach Salad with Warm Bacon Dressing that seems like the one I remember from my childhood.

Swanson TV Dinners

We ate TV dinners fairly often when I was a kid, especially on Saturday nights when my parents would go out and my brother and I would have a babysitter. Now normally I liked the food in the TV dinners but with one huge exception – tator tots. ICK! I know, call me crazy but I did not like tator tots as a kid and I still do not like them as an adult. My favorite item in them were the peas and carrots mixed together!
