Autumn is one of my favorite times of the year. It finally is cooler outside, the leaves start to turn such gorgeous colors of red, orange, and yellow, planning starts for fall holiday food, the smell of fresh baked goods seems to be everywhere, and there are lots of natural items to use in craft projects!

SheSpeaks and Febreze (disclosure – they are sponsoring this post) sent me the most adorable little barn box the other day. They even include little “props” like white picket fencing, hay bales, and wagon wheels. Some fall inspiration was added in the form of some recipe cards for food, crafts, and home décor.

I loved that it opened like my old Little People houses did as a kid. This barn itself is going to be used for a toy or made into something else wonderful I think. Inside the barn was an assortment of Febreze Fall Home Harvest products. We actually have used Febreze in our house for years so this made me happy to get the new scents. The Febreze NOTICEables is a dispenser that holds this unique refill that has two complimentary scents in one. The dispenser plugs into the wall and alternates between the scents so you actually notice them more in a good way! I put the Sandalwood and Chai combo in our master bedroom, the Vanilla and Sugar combo will go in the kitchen. They also included a Febreze Car Vent Clip in Toasted Almond which promptly went into my car and it smells wonderful!

The acorn centerpiece project looked really simple and I love the idea however, I have three very curious cats in my house and they would be scooping those acorns out and flinging them around all over the floor. So I took the idea of these natural craft and came up with a similar idea that was more cat friendly.

Gather your supplies to make the pine cone mason jar centerpiece

You will need:

  1. Large mason jar with lid
  2. Pine cones, acorns, and other like items
(you can collect them outside or just buy some at the store)
  3. A small piece of burlap

simply add pine cones to the jar

Now here is the tricky part (NOT) – simply add your pine cones, acorns, and other items into the mason jar. Make sure you turn it as you fill it so it will look good from all sides.

add silk flowers for an extra pop of color

I wanted a little more burst of color in my jar so I added some of these puffy red things and some green leaves to my jar. Just use a pencil or chopstick to help push them down along the glass. By the way, mine are just the fake flowers and leaves from the store.

Just play around with it until you like the way your filled jar looks.

Now for the lid – which keeps the cats out – separate the ring and seal lid. Cut a piece of burlap about an inch or so wider than the lid. Now sandwich the burlap between the seal lid and the ring and push down snuggly. There is no need for glue even.

Turn the lid upside down and use a pair of scissors to trim the extra burlap down below the rim of the lid.

The reason I added the burlap piece to the lid was twofold. First I wanted it to look a little more rustic than just having the silver lid showing. Secondly, I can now spray some of my Febreze Fall Home Harvest air freshener directly on that burlap and it will release out into the air a bit. Just give it another squirt whenever the mood strikes you. Add the lid to your jar and you are done with this project!

I think this is very cute and simple. Gaining inspiration again from the original acorn centerpiece project that Febreze gave me, I may make more in different sizes of mason jars and arrange them together in a group on the table. Very autumnal, natural, and cat friendly! For more ideas be sure to like Febreze on Facebook and follow @Febreze_Fresh on Twitter.

What scents inspire you in the autumn? Is this project something you might make? What items would you include in the jar?
