BBQ Joints in St. Louis, Missouri

Growing up in the Midwest means there is a lot of barbecues happening and it also has spurred some great BBQ restaurants and smokehouses here in the area. Hubby and I are always anxious to try out new places to find delicious food and today I thought I would share some of the BBQ places around town if you need a winter fix.

  • Sugarfire Smoke House
    This is the newest place we have found. There are three locations around town, St. Charles, Olivette, and O’Fallon. Since I live in St. Charles that is the one we have been to.  Food here is served cafeteria style and they put your order on a large sheet pan with butcher paper. They open at 11am and close when they run out of food. The brisket and pulled pork are our favorites. Plenty of sides to select from including a cast of regulars plus some special offers on a daily basis. The BBQ sauce is not on the meat, you add it yourself and they have lots of options including a white sauce even. The décor is very casual and eclectic and fun.  I’ve gone in and gotten the food to go and we have eaten there. Hubby’s work also had this catered in for lunch one day and regardless of where we eat it we always have been pleased with Sugarfire.

  • Pappy’s Smokehouse
    This is one of the most talked BBQ places in St. Louis and rightly so. There is often quite a long line. Hubby and I rarely will wait for a table anywhere more than 15 minutes but we decided to wait it out at Pappy’s to see what all the fuss was. The line started outside and looped through the long hallways and into the dining room and it took about an hour to get to the front to place our order. There is no grabbing a table and waiting either, you don’t sit until you order. Let me tell you, it was worth the wait! Hubby is a tough critic of BBQ and he just loved everything here. We suggest ordering one of the big combos they offer so everyone can taste a bit of everything. The ribs were probably our favorite here.

  • The Shaved Duck
    It took me for what seems like forever to finally get to The Shaved Duck but I am glad I finally went with my friend Karen. This is a more modern menu with classics mixed in. Once again, I suggest getting a combo so that everyone at your table can try multiple things, you get tons of food. The Smothered Fries were to die for – fries covered with pulled rib and pork meat and topped with a cheese sauce and grated cheddar! They also had a smoked meatloaf which I had never even heard of before. Meatloaf is not something I generally order out because I’ve seen some scary meatloaves LOL – but this was amazing. A really unique flavor. They do have duck on the menu also but we did not try any of it (yet). Get there early if you do not want a wait, the bar at the front gets super crowded and it is a fairly small dining room.

  • Bandana’s
    Here you get a more traditional BBQ and there are several locations around St. Louis and throughout Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa. It is good BBQ but not O-M-G BBQ. It is easy to get into though and consistent on food quality. I also love that they have a nice smaller meal for under $6 that includes choice of pork, beef, chicken, turkey or sausage, plus you get choice of 2 sides and a piece of garlic bread. This makes portion control much easier here and very reasonably priced.

  • Big Woody’s BBQ
    I love that this little BBQ joint in St. Charles is still going and seems to always be steadily busy when I drive by. I think the St. Charles Police Department employees are probably very good customers too since it is so close in location.   • Hendrick’s BBQ
