This post was inspired and sponsored by Domain.ME, the provider of the personal domains that end in .ME, and Name.com, a registrar that provides services like custom website design. They aim to promote thought leadership to the tech world. All thoughts and opinions in this post are my own, however.
Many people ask me about starting their own blog or website. One of the first things you need to do is start thinking about your personal branding. It is amazing how much we change and evolve with your ideas of what we want to do in business or expand on what we do even. Because of this creating your own personal brand is a great place to start. In the process of creating your brand you need a “home”. Online, your home is where people can always go to find out about you and all of the things you do, this is your domain. Once you have your domain everything else you do you can connect to this home base.
Just like we may move our actual family into a new home at a new address, sometimes that happens in the online world as well. However, if you have a personal brand home (domain) than you can always have a permanent “address” for people to find you. Even if you already have a blog or site that you like, adding a personally branded domain will be a huge benefit in the long run.
Domain.ME is a great place to go for this. They actually just sponsored the recharging lounge at the Type-A Conference I just attended last week. My best suggestion is to try and get your name as your .ME domain. If you have a unique name your chances will be really good – if you have a more common name like me you may have to be a little more creative, but you still need to keep it simple. I own several .ME domains: RobynWright.me, RobynsWorld.me, RobynsWorldMedia.me and Bdog.me (that one is for Hubby actually). Why I own so many is because I tend to hoard domain names, it’s a habit many bloggers have actually – we need a support group LOL! For you though, just grab at least one that make sense for you.
What do you put on your home domain?
You can really do so many things with your own domain. There is no right and wrong to be honest. Here are a few ideas to get you started though.
- Your Landing Page
On the main page welcome your guests and point where else they can find you online. This would include any other domains you own, links to your Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Blab, Periscope, and other social networks.
- Your Resume
If you are currently looking for a job or if you are just open to being out there in case the right job comes along, putting a resume up online is phenomenal. You do not have to put your full contact info on this online resume as you would on a traditional paper resume you send out, just make sure to include one or two ways someone can contact you though.
- Your Voice
You can use this domain just to share your own voice too. As a blogger I love being able to share my thoughts and ideas about anything. While I do that here on this blog, you do not have to keep them separate if you do not want to.
- Your Photos
So many of us love sharing photos online, but when you store them on other social networks and sites you are at the mercy of them remaining in business, changing terms of service, etc. If you have your own domain you can upload all those photos you want to share and have total control of them.
- Your Notes
I am asked over and over about certain topics and “what was that site/link”. If you have the same thing happen to you, create a page within your own domain to put all of those things so you can easily point friends and family to it to find all those little gems.

Do you already own your own .ME domain or would you consider getting one? How would you use it build your own personal brand?
