Cortana is the virtual assistant built into Windows 10. She is extremely helpful! Today I’m giving you a few basic tips to get started using Cortana to make your Windows 10 experience even better.

To use Cortana just look at your taskbar and click on the little circle. That is your computer’s search function and where Cortana lives.

Now let’s make Cortana be able to listen to your commands and requests without having to touch a thing! Once you have the Cortana menu open, over on the left side click on the notebook icon.

A new menu will appear. Click on settings to bring up the next menu we need.

This menu actually has quite a few functions in it but the second one down is “Hey Cortana”. Make sure you have this set to ON. Now when you say “Hey Cortana” you will hear a little beep and see Cortana pop up from your task bar.

Now when you want to search, open a program or app, set a reminder, get traffic, or even hear a joke you can just speak the request! Give it a try with some of these commands, remember to wait for the beep after Cortana talks to give your verbal answer or command.

  • “Hey Cortana” (wait for beep). “Search for chicken recipes.”
Cortana will open a search page for chicken recipes for you.
  • “Hey Cortana” (wait for beep). “Open Paint.”
Cortana will now open the Paint app on your computer. Note that if you have other programs that use the word paint she may ask you which one and give you choices. Wait for the beep and speak the number of the option you want.
  • “Hey Cortana” (wait for beep). “Remind me to pick up milk.”
Cortana will now ask you when you want her to remind you. Just remember to wait for the beep after each question she asks you.
When the time comes, Cortana will remind you!
  • “Hey Cortana” (wait for beep). “Tell me about the traffic.”
Cortana will now bring up a map and show the traffic near you.
  • “Hey Cortana” (wait for beep). “Tell me a joke.”
Cortana will now tell you a joke!

Here are a few screenshots of the reminders option.
