National Tortilla Chip day is February 24th and what a fun holiday to celebrate! I love tortilla chips myself and know most of you do as well. Did you know you can make your own tortilla chips in the oven at home also? It is super simple!
Homemade Baked Tortilla Chips
You will need corn tortillas, you can make those or buy them pre-made. The great thing is that you can flavor these chips however you would like! Preheat the oven and then get the tortillas ready. You will need to add a bit of oil to them. You can do this by spraying them lightly with oil or you can mix your seasonings info liquid vegetable oil and brush it onto the tortillas. If you spray them you will then sprinkle your seasoning mix over them after spraying. Now stack up the tortillas and cut into triangles (or strips or whatever shape you like). Place in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for about 12-15 minutes, tossing occasionally, until they are crisp. Remove and let cool.
For your seasonings you can mix up any flavors you like. Be adventurous and try out some of those things in your spice cabinet. Some seasonings to consider are salt (of course), garlic powder or garlic salt, chili powder, ground cumin, oregano, paprika, cayenne pepper, black pepper, lime juice or lime salt, coriander, thyme, curry powder, even pre-made mixes like taco seasonings, ranch dip mix, and the like. You can also go sweet with sugar and cinnamon but add a touch salt too or add a little cayenne pepper to the sweet mixture to spice it up a bit.
